Mekong Delta opportunities: from a real problem to a first project

A practical guide to Mekong student projects, internships, business pilots and funding research: choose a challenge, check a call and prepare a useful proposal.

MEKONG DELTA · A PRACTICAL START

An opportunity becomes actionable when you know who needs help, what work you can contribute and how the next step will be agreed. In the Mekong Delta, that might be a student experiment, an individual project role, a business pilot or a published funding call. Each needs a different kind of preparation.

At a glance

  • Choose the role first: build as a team, contribute individually, host an experiment or mentor.
  • A programme description is a place to research; an open call needs its own current notice, eligibility and deadline.
  • Prepare one page that names the user, problem, evidence, smallest experiment and support needed.

Which route fits what you can contribute?

Our team and internship interest forms are separate because the responsibilities differ. A student team proposes work it will take ownership of together. An individual describes the contribution they can make within a defined role. For the proposed three-month incubation cycle, timing, supervision, resources and commitments need to be agreed with the team before work starts.

  • Team route: a shared problem, complementary roles and availability to run an experiment together.
  • Individual route: relevant skills, examples of your work and a realistic weekly commitment.
  • Host route: a business or organisation with a workflow to investigate and a person who can guide access.
  • Mentor route: a specific skill you can review, a useful introduction or feedback at an agreed stage.

What kinds of projects can you investigate?

The six Cần Thơ 2030 challenge briefs are practical starting points. They describe questions to investigate, rather than completed findings. Begin with access to a user and a workflow; choose the technology after you understand what a better outcome would look like.

  • Agricultural traceability: follow one batch and identify which records a buyer needs to check.
  • Aquaculture: explore one water-quality signal and the decision it could help a farm make.
  • Surface water: assess one available monitoring dataset with its intended operator.
  • Industrial energy: map one facility’s energy use before comparing possible improvements.
  • Academic credentials: understand how an issuer, learner and verifier currently exchange evidence.
  • Workforce credentials: map how an employer checks a qualification and tracks its expiry.

Where can you research projects and funding?

Start with the source that owns the opportunity. University notices are useful for academic projects and student participation. City announcements help identify local priorities and responsible offices. MRC publications provide river-basin research context; the official ADB, World Bank and Australian development pages provide programme and project information. Follow each to the relevant notice before spending time on an application.

Use our knowledge directory to find these publishers and the source updates page to follow collected publications. The practical question is whether a specific call is accepting applications from an organisation or person like you. A general programme page, a project announcement and a procurement notice can have very different purposes.

What should you check before applying?

Save the original notice and its date. Then make a short eligibility note before writing the proposal. If the source does not answer an important question, use its named contact to resolve that point.

  • Applicant: individual, student team, registered business, university or consortium; required lead organisation.
  • Scope: eligible location, sector, project stage and activities; match geographic definitions to the notice.
  • Timing: opening date, deadline, time zone, delivery period and any clarification deadline.
  • Resources: eligible costs, any co-funding, payment conditions and staff time needed to deliver and report.
  • Responsibilities: required evidence, ownership terms, permissions and reporting; read the actual call documents.

What belongs in a useful one-page proposal?

Write enough for someone to decide whether a first conversation is worthwhile. A concrete request makes it easier for a business, academic or mentor to respond. Use this outline for an initial Cần Thơ 2030 enquiry:

  • Who and where: the user, site and person responsible for the workflow.
  • The problem: one repeated task or decision, what happens now and the evidence you already have.
  • The first experiment: the smallest useful change, information needed and permissions to obtain.
  • The measure: what you will compare with the starting point and what would make you stop or change direction.
  • The contribution and request: team skills, available time and the specific access, feedback or tools you need.

Put your first proposal on one page

Bring a problem you can explain and a first step you can test. Use the team route to describe the people, work and support you have in mind.
